李清照的《声声慢·寻寻觅觅》四个节选英译版本的比较研究

1. 林语堂译本
寻寻觅觅,冷冷清清,凄凄惨惨戚戚
So dim, so dark,
So dense, so dull,
So damp, so dank,
So dead!
乍暖还寒时候,最难将息 The weather, now warm, now cold, Makes it harder Than ever to forget! 三杯两盏淡酒,怎敌他、晚来风急 How can a few cups of thin wine Bring warmth against The chilly winds of sunset?
雁过也,正伤心,却是旧时相识 I recognize the geese flying overhead: My old friends, Bring not the old memories back!
林语堂的翻译以简洁和单音节押头韵为特点,译文中大量使用了 d 开头的形容词,通过层层递进的词汇选择,生动地展现了词人的情感。尤其需要指出的是林语堂在译文中使用了两组同义词重复来还原出汉语原文所隐含的“昏暗”和“潮湿”的意象,如用dim 和dark,damp 和dank。林语堂的最后一句译文用了dead 一词作为整篇译文的收尾,对此,笔者不揣浅陋,觉得似乎把 dead 一词改为 desolate 更加契合汉语原文的“凄凄惨惨戚戚”之情。
2. 杨宪益夫妇译本
寻寻觅觅,冷冷清清,凄凄惨惨戚戚 Seeking, seeking,
Chilly and quiet,
Desolate, painful and miserable.
乍暖还寒时候,最难将息 Even when it’s warmer there is still a chill, It is most difficult to keep well. 三杯两盏淡酒,怎敌他、晚来风急 Three or two cups of light wine, How can they ward off the strong morning wind?
雁过也,正伤心,却是旧时相识 Wild geese fly past, while I’m broken-hearted; But I recognize they are my old friends.
杨宪益夫妇的翻译注重意象的直接呈现,用七个形容词对应七对叠字,生动形象地展现了词人情感的变化。尤其需要指出的是杨宪益夫妇把“寻寻觅觅”译为 seeking, seeking,用 ing 形式凸显出动感。此外,李清照最后一句“雁过也,正伤心,却是旧时相识”,杨宪益夫妇译为 But I recognize they are my old friends 属于直译,而在林语堂译文中则译为(My old friends)Bring not the old memories back!则更属于意译,凸显出李清照原文背后所蕴含的一种往事无法再现的忧伤之感。更为重要的一点是杨宪益夫妇的汉诗英译更趋同于翁显良的“散体译诗”,而不是以许渊冲为代表的“韵体译诗”。
3. 徐忠杰译本
寻寻觅觅,冷冷清清,凄凄惨惨戚戚 I’ve a sense of something missing I must seek. Everything about me looks dismal and bleak.
Nothing that gives me pleasure, I can find.
乍暖还寒时候,最难将息 Even the weather has proved most unkind. It is warm, but abruptly it turns cold again. An unbroken rest—most difficult to obtain.
三杯两盏淡酒,怎敌他晚来风急! Three cups of thin wine would utterly fail To cope with the rising evening gale.
雁过也,正伤心,却是旧时相识。 Myself, into woe, a flight of wild geese has thrown. But with them, very familiar I have grown. 徐忠杰的翻译将词诗歌化,虽然句子较长,但尝试通过更自由的形式传达原词的意境,且尽量做到了押尾 韵。不足之处是译文句子偏多,在英译表达方面牺牲了汉诗的紧凑感。
4. 许渊冲译本
寻寻觅觅,冷冷清清,凄凄惨惨戚戚
I look for what I miss; I know not what it is. I feel so sad, so drear, So lonely, without cheer.
乍暖还寒时候,最难将息 How hard is it
To keep me fit
In this lingering cold!
三杯两盏淡酒,怎敌他、晚来风急
Hardly warmed up
By cup on cup
Of wine so dry,
Oh, how could I
Endure at dusk the drift
Of wind so swift?
雁过也,正伤心,却是旧时相识。 It breaks my heart, alas, To see the wild geese pass, For they are my acquaintances of old.
许渊冲是汉诗英译中“韵体译诗”的杰出代表人物,许渊冲的英译注重“三美理论”(音美,形美和意美),通过增加主语和调整语序,使译文更加符合英语表达习惯,同时保留了原词的韵律感。需要指出的是,在英译版本中林语堂和许渊冲都是侧重于“韵体译诗”的,但是林语堂采用了更为简洁的短语形式,而许渊冲则更多使用了完整的英语句子来表达。此外,关于李清照原文的“乍暖还寒”一词的英译,林语堂译为The weather, nowwarm, ow old;杨宪益夫妇译为 Even hen t’s armer here s till hill;徐忠杰译为 Even he eatherhas roved ost nkind. t s arm, ut bruptly t urns old gain. 而许渊冲则用了 In his ingeringcold!。从这四个译文中可以看出,许渊冲的 lingering cold 最为简洁和达意,而其它三个译文都明显拖沓和冗长,尤其是徐忠杰的译文居然用了两句话之多。尤其需要指出的是,林语堂译文中有一处词汇选择略显不足,如“最难将息”被译为harder to forget,这和李清照所要表达的含义出入较大,存在错译之嫌。
个人觉得从简洁,达意和押韵这三个方面来评价,李清照的《声声慢•寻寻觅觅》这四个英译版本中,许渊冲的译文最优。
