Emotional Analysis of the Performance of the Art Song "The Phoenix Courtship" from Ancient Chinese Poetry

Abstract:Chinese ancient poetry art songs are a form art songs with Chinese characteristics, created by drawing on Western creative techniques and forms and integrating Chinese ancient poetry culture. This article takes Li Yan's work "The Phoenix Courtship" as the object study, and through in-depth analysis its historical background and singing emotions contributes its own modest efforts to promoting Chinese traditional culture.

I. Historical Background “The Phoenix Courtship"

The story takes place in the Han Dynasty, with the protagonists being Sima Xiangru and Zhuo Wenjun. Sima Xiangru was widely praised in the Western Han Dynasty. In Linqu County, there was a wealthy family named Zhuo Wangsun, who had a daughter named Zhuo Wenjun, who was very beautiful and dignified and also loved music. Unfortunately, her husband died and she became a widow. Sima Xiangru had already heard her. On his way back to Sichuan, Sima Xiangru was invited to the Zhuo family. By chance, he discovered that Zhuo Wenjun was secretly watching him play the zither. Sima Xiangru fell in love with Zhuo Wenjun at first sight and composed the famous zither piece "The Phoenix Courtship" to express his love for her.

II. Singing Emotions "The Phoenix Courtship"

When singing the ancient poetry art song "The Phoenix Courtship", it is necessary to deeply explore the unique aesthetic value ancient poetry. This work contains various emotions such as excitement and sadness. The author hopes to highlight Zhuo Wenjun's position in his heart through this writing technique. To accurately express his complex psychology, the ancient poetry art song "The Phoenix Courtship” uses a large number particles, and each "xi" at

the end each sentence corresponds to a certain note duration. When singing complex emotions, the singer should adjust the singing intensity based on the literal meaning. In addition, the main melody the two parts this work is basically the same. During the first performance, the emotional appeal should be slightly restrained, and the singing tone can be intensified in the climax to highlight the song's infectiousness. However, in the second repetition, there has already been an accumulation emotions between the singer and the audience. Therefore, the author believes that the singer should incorporate more emotions, making them more passionate and the tone more aggressive to enhance the emotional rapport between the singer and the audience and evoke a deeper emotional resonance within them.
