Investigation and Design of Primary School English homework feedback

ABSTRACT:Homework feedback, though a simple part of teaching, is vital in English education. It serves as a bridge between teachers and students, fostering communication and enhancing learning motivation. However, issues exist in the design of English homework feedback for primary students, leading to ineffective results. This study analyzes elementary English homework feedback, identifies common problems, and suggests improvements to enhance its effectiveness.

Chapter 1 Introduction
As society evolves, existing feedback methods may become outdated. Moreover, existing methods may not highlight the unique aspects of English learning, making them less effective. So there is a need to analyze current feedback types in primary schools and offer strategies to address existing issues.
Chapter 2 Research Process
Data was collected from 48 feedback samples from three schools near Liaocheng University, using interviews and feedback collection as research methods.
Chapter 3 Result and analysis
3.1 Monotonous and rigid
Many teachers used simple symbols or repeated phrases (“good,” “work harder”), which failed to engage students or address specific issues.
3.2 Poorly targeted
Teachers often used generic comments, failing to cater to different student levels.
3.3 Lack of authenticity
Some feedback included personal criticism, which was often sarcastic and demotivating, leading to students feeling discouraged.
3.4 Beyond understanding
Teachers sometimes used complex language beyond students’ comprehension or wrote illegibly, causing confusion.
3.5 Lack of encouragement for poor homework
While good work received ample praise, students who struggled received less encouragement.
3.6 Direct error correction
Teachers mainly corrected mistakes directly, leaving little room for student self-correction.
Chapter 4 English homework feedback design
4.1 Use hand-drawn stick figures
Simple drawings, combined with words, can help students grasp the teacher’s message more intuitively. Examples include smiley faces for well-done work or a small figure pointing at errors for students to review.
4.2 Use recently learned English
This reinforces their understanding and gives them a sense of achievement when they can comprehend the feedback. Additionally, introducing slightly advanced words can motivate students to look up new terms, thereby expanding their vocabulary.
4.3 Use interesting and understandable speech
Simple, lively language can encourage students to interact with the feedback. Teachers should also ensure their handwriting is clear, as illegible comments can confuse students.
4.4 Show Care About Each Student’s Life
Teachers can include supportive messages, such as wishes for good health or holiday greetings, to build stronger student-teacher bonds. Personalized comments can make students feel valued and respected, fostering a positive learning environment.
4.5 Encourage Self-Correction
This approach encourages independent thinking and deepens their understanding of the material. Using hints and prompts rather than straightforward corrections can help students learn from their mistakes more effectively.
4.6 Tailor Feedback for Different Levels
For weaker students, even minor improvements should be praised to boost their confidence. More capable students can be challenged with higher expectations. This differentiation helps all students feel acknowledged and motivated.
